CSUDH Polling Place Brings Democratic Process to Campus on Election Day
On Nov. 4, the CSU Dominguez Hills participated in the presidential election by providing a regional polling place in the College of Extended and International Education auditorium. Approximately 700 members of the campus and local community cast their ballots at the site with the help of student volunteers and volunteers from the Los Angeles County Registrar’s office. CSUDH students accounted for 426 of those voters.
CSUDH President Mildred García cast her ballot on campus, recalling her family’s high regard for participating in the democratic process and pointing out that the experience is invaluable for students.
“It’s exciting that we’re having this voting poll here at Dominguez Hills,” García said. “It shows our students are engaged in the election process.”
Alumna Susan Lewis (Class of ’82, B.A., business administration) was one of the main CSUDH polling place coordinators. The daughter of Gil Smith, former Carson mayor and longtime supporter of the university, she wanted to be able to contribute to the historic election, she said.
“It encourages people, it inspires people and I wanted to be a part of it,” she said. “This is the first time we’ve been a polling place. People are really excited. Everyone wants to make sure their vote is counted, so we’re trying to make sure that that happens.”

Gov. Schwarzenegger Visits CSU Dominguez Hills to Announce Partnership to Power CSUs with Solar Energy
|
| With CSU Dominguez Hills and its 525-kilowatt solar electric parking canopy as a backdrop, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced on Oct. 21 that the state has partnered with SunEdison to provide affordable solar power at 15 California State University (CSU) campuses and the CSU Chancellor’s Office.
In 2006, CSU Dominguez Hills became among the first CSU campuses and state facilities to participate in the power-purchase agreement, when SunEdison had a 3,288-panel solar electric canopy installed over a parking lot on campus. The system produces approximately 800,000 kilowatt hours a year, the equivalent of nearly a quarter of the university’s electricity needs. More importantly, the system produces
clean renewable energy onsite. The CSU Dominguez Hills project serves as a prime example of the types of installations that will be seen in the coming year on the other CSU campuses as a result of the partnership. |
